House Passes Continuing Resolution to Prevent Government Shutdown and Fund National Defense
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. House of Representatives today approved funding to extend federal operations, and to fund the Department of Defense for the 2018 Fiscal Year. The Continuing Resolution (CR) is a stopgap measure that will maintain government funding through March 23, 2018. In absence of this legislation, existing funding would run out on February 8, 2018.
House Appropriations Committee Chairman Rodney Frelinghuysen made the following statement on the legislation:
“Our current Continuing Resolution expires on Thursday, and without this legislation, large segments of the federal government will again shut down.
“The challenges we face around the world cannot be met under this fitful ‘stop and go’ Continuing Resolution process. While we delay doing the nation’s business, our military and economic competitors are consolidating their gains.
“However, we are all keenly aware that more time is needed for our leaders in the House, Senate, and White House to negotiate overall funding levels for the 2018 fiscal year. This bill should allow that to happen.
“As soon as Congressional and White House leaders reach a bipartisan budget agreement – which could and should happen at any moment – our Committee will get to work immediately to finish negotiations on all 12 “year-long” funding bills. It is the duty of Congress to complete these annual bills, enact responsible funding for important programs and services including national defense, and provide stability for the government and for the people we represent.”
